BOXING
DISCLAIMER: I have not had a chance to watch/rewatch the films yet. I will be doing this all day Saturday and will have my actual post finalized by Sunday night. Essentially what I have here is the outline of what I will be doing.

Section one: Original Portrayal of Boxer (including clips of living conditions)

Rocky:
Small-time boxer. Not living a luxurious life in Philly. Trains in meat factory and using Philadelphia museum stairs instead of in a fancy training facility.

Million Dollar Baby:
white-trash family, working as a waitress in Missouri but moves to LA to train with a great trainer in a piece of junk gym.

Cinderella Man:
Down and out ex-boxer who broke his hand. Trying to support his family but struggling to do so during the great depression.

Section Two: Overcoming Odds

Rocky:
Opponent is undefeated heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, Rocky is a relative nobody. The odds are all against him. Rocky really wants to go the distance against Creed because nobody has ever done it before.

Million Dollar Baby:
Maggie is a woman. She struggles to survive in a male-dominated world. Wins some matches. Secures title fights.

Cinderella Man:
Offered to fill in for a fight against a contender for the belt. Stuns everyone with a knockout against him. Works his way against all odds to a title fight. 10-1 odds against him in the fight.

Section Three: Assessing the monomyth

Rocky:
Very much sticks to the monomyth, though his victory is a personal one when he goes the distance, instead of actually winning the fight.

Million Dollar Baby:
Doesn’t quite stick to the monomyth. No victory, and everything after getting knocked out and paralyzed is quite sad. If Maggie doesn’t keep on fighting, is she really a hero?

Cinderella Man:
Sticks to the monomyth to a tee. Victory, celebration, romance. It has it all.

I WILL ALSO BE ADDING IN A SECTION ABOUT LITERATURE IN THE FORM OF A SHORT STORY IF NEEDED.
